Strippers and Cancer

This past weekend I had the opportunity to meet with a small group of women in my community for a casual afternoon of doing nothing more than visiting and encouraging one another. And of course there was plenty of laughter and “girl talk.”

I’m happy to report that, for the most part, I managed to behave myself… Well, other than shouting out as the hostess’s hubby attempted to sneak through the kitchen,
“Is this the stripper you promised??”

I Feel Pretty, Oh So Pretty… Well, At Least Smart. And Skinny.

This past Sunday night my husband asked me to watch Miss USA with him.

If that doesn’t make you giggle you aren’t thinking about it correctly 🙂

Now Marcus is NOT a big TV fan, and reality shows or competition shows? Please!
Not. His. Thing.
But, Miss Missouri (who was totally robbed!) is from Marc’s hometown, High Hill.
(And we are all super proud of her!)

Of course being the wise woman I am, I totally knew I was supposed to describe each woman’s flaws…

“She’s looks like big bird.”
“She has so much fake tan she’s orange.”
“Her hair looks like Al Sharptons.”
“Her neck is SOOOO fat.” Continue reading

Pinky Swear!

Yes – I know – I haven’t been around much lately.
I’m still recovering from my automobile crash (thanks again for all your sweet notes). It’s amazing how much of your time visiting doctors and healing and resting takes!

Yet during the midst of what has mostly been a LOT of taking it VERY easy I somehow managed to do this:

Broken finger in splint

Yep. If you can’t tell from the photo I managed to break my pinkie.
(NOT in the car crash, but rather a few weeks after.)

And from walking around with this device on my hand, experience tells me the next question is: “Ohh! How’d you do it?” Continue reading

The Story I’d LIKE to tell ~ that isn’t exactly true…

Here’s the story I’d LIKE to tell you:

I had one of those magical epiphany moments, complete with the heavens parting a choir singing and an angelic voice proclaiming:

“Marvelyne, it is time for you to practice what you preach, take some time to stop and smell the roses, enjoy the small moments, work on some personal projects, stop working so much… yada yada yada…”

So, being the wise person I am, I’ve slowed down, started prioritizing more and I’ve been taking some time to work on the things that are truly important…

But here’s the truth.

One For One

It was 3AM.

I was alone, driving downtown Orlando (the scary part) lost while trying to find the location for my sister’s video shoot. (Make it Loud by Martha Munizzi).

It felt so foreign with little if any traffic, empty sidewalks, dim lighting. I admit I was feeling a bit creeped out (and maybe a tiny bit annoyed that I had such bad directions to follow...)

Then I saw them. Glancing up and to the left – behind the empty sidewalk, in the grass in front of an abandoned looking building. A man giving CPR to someone on the ground.

And just like that – my fear vanished… well actually every thought in my head vanished except that I had to help.

I stopped my car in the street, leaving the keys in, engine running and the door open I jumped out, rushing toward to injured person.

About 5 steps away from my vehicle I began to realize there was no CPR going on… Continue reading

Counting Backwards…

I have long suspected that I am the only person in the entire whole wide world who ever changes toilet paper rolls.

Okay. Maybe not THE only person on the planet – but I think I win the title in our home at least! So – I decided to conduct a little experiment.

I made a FIRM vow to not replace a single roll. No matter how very tempting it might become I determined in my heart to just watch and see what would happen. Continue reading

A Woman’s Worth

I had the amazing opportunity to present at @MarthaMunizzi’s “Fight Like a Girl” Women’s Conference. In addition to speaking, she allowed me the honor of crafting the opening night’s introduction text. Continue reading

Surviving a Florida Tornado

I still can’t believe I was there when it happened… Sitting safely in my car I watched the swirling action of a tornado as it raced across the landscape. The fact that I didn’t immediately go running, screaming in the opposite direction is a true testament of fortitude. Especially when you understand I’m terrified of these things! I mean – nightmare city for me!

Ahh. But there I was. And being the faithful blogger I am with my burning desire to capture life as it happens… I bit my nails, grabbed my iPhone and filmed away. All for you. So you can see the fury of nature at work.

Here goes…

Warning: What you are about to see is an unedited act of nature. If you are unsettled by such things… Perhaps you should skip the video.

… you say ‘goodbye’ I say ‘hello’…

Nourish beginnings, let us nourish beginnings. Not all things are blest, but the seeds of all things are blest. The blessing is in the seed. ~ M. Rukeyser

Perhaps I’m a wee bit overly sentimental. Ha – okay, I am ridiculously sentimental! It’s almost a problem! Almost. …  Okay, sometimes it’s a problem but that is NOT why we are gathered here today so shhhh! Enough about that already!

I love routine. I enjoy rituals and ceremony. I adore celebrations. I treasure traditions.

Truthfully many of these things are hard to keep track of in the quickly moving, often changing, somewhat chaotic lifestyle we lead. So when I get the joy of truly honoring a family custom – I embrace it fully.

One thing that we’ve been able to maintain over the years is the giving of a Christmas ornament each holiday to document something about the season of life of the receiver. It’s kind of a celebration of the year completed – with a kiss of promise for the New Year.

Here is a quick snapshot of our family at this moment:

Our own little Drummer Boy :)

Our own little Drummer Boy 🙂

MASON: (only the hands down, absolutely most adorable little child ever in the history of the world – just sayin’!) At 13 and a 1/2 months he really loves three things: Dancing (and man oh man can he shake that booty!), Banging on things to make music and sound, and Sticking his hand into your mouth – I don’t mean fingers – his entire fist as far as he can. (Personally I’m convinced at this point we have a future Dancing Dentist who Drums on the side growing up!) So because I could not find ornaments of leotards or dental instruments, I went with a drum. Exciting I know. 🙂 Continue reading
