A Star Butts By Any Other Name…

I love Starbucks. Period.  (Yes, I know you’re shocked!)

I know some people live and die by other brands and others are positive there’s “no difference” – but, for me, it’s Starbucks all the way baby!

So when I drove by this “tan wax & nail” salon it totally made me giggle:

For the Sake of our Children…

Like everyone else – I’ve spent the last 30 hours heartbroken. I can’t watch more than a few moments of television without tears filling my eyes. Children. The most innocent and vulnerable. There are no words.

And like most of you, I have my moments of rage and disgust. I have my ideals and values. And I’m grateful to live in a Nation where discussions and debate can occur. But right now, I have no answers – only heartbreak.

The families, the friends, the first responders, the teachers… The list goes on and on… And all we can do is send our love and prayers.

Of course you must do what feels right to you —- but this is the only thing I feel like doing. This powerful song by my beautiful sister Mary Alessi is playing constantly in my heart and mind. I hope it will give you a bit of peace in this tragic time as well.

Pray

For the sake of our children we pray
For the sake of our children we pray
We pray cover and keep them
With Your mighty hand
Hear our cry today
For the sake of our children we pray

For the sake of our brothers we pray
For the sake of our brothers we pray
We pray cover and keep them
With Your mighty hand
Hear our cry today
For the sake of our brothers we pray

We pray
Pray
We pray
Pray
We pray
We pray
For the sake of our brothers we pray

If My people who are called by My name
Humble themselves and seek My face
And turn from their ways
Then I will hear from heaven
I will hear from heaven and forgive their sins
And I heal their land

For the sake of the nations we pray
For the sake of the nations we pray
We pray cover and keep them
With Your sovereign hand
Hear our cry today
For the sake of the nations we pray

We pray
Pray
We pray
Pray
We pray
We pray
For the sake of the nations we pray
For the sake of our brothers we pray
For the sake of our children we pray

The Unveiling

I’m totally stealing this from Marcus’ blog because it was such a totally special moment and I couldn’t say it any better! I’m so very proud of Mister Ivy League Grad – and so very grateful to have had the opportunity to go along for the journey!! Love you dork!!

As you may know, Marvelyne and I lived on the upper west side of Manhattan from August 2011 to June 2012. We’re always up for a year long adventure, especially in NYC which is our favorite city on earth! But, there was a bigger reason we relocated to New York for a year.

Ewww! That is SOOOOO Unattractive on You!

So you probably know we have Garrett (the Ninja dog). However you might not know we also have another four legged fur ball that lives with us. Smooch is a toy schnoodle (toy poodle + toy schnauzer) that is 9 lbs of cuddly love. (BTW: I did NOT name her – and admit I get more than a little embarrassed every time I make a vet appointment or grooming visit and say her name out loud. I wanted to name her “Armani” or “Gucci” or “Ridley” – you know, something much more mature…) 🙂

Rocky

Two years ago my mother got her first dog. A gorgeous Papillion named Rocky. Now, the first time we puppy sat he was about 2 months old and quickly earned the nickname “devil dog.” It was all normal puppy behavior – incessant playing, turning everything into a toy, barking like a lunatic and complete disobedience.  Just normal stuff. However, his puppy antics frustrated the heck out of Smooch. She did not want to play, or even be “addressed” by this Tasmanian flurry of fluff that was obsessed with gaining her attention.

Over the years Rocky has become a lovely, beautifully behaved dog. He’s really a pleasure to be around. So when I agreed to puppy sit a few weeks ago I knew it would be smooth sailing.

WRONG.

This time it was Smooch, not Rocky, that became a pain.

Every time I picked Rocky up, Smooch would worm her way in between us. She didn’t want him near her den (kennel). She didn’t want him on the bed. She didn’t want him on my lap. She didn’t even seem to want me to acknowledge his existence at all.

This precious little girl dog that I adore and lavish with love was acting so very insecure and jealous. After years of her being the princess, her place totally secured in our lives – she was threatened by a temporary visitor.

I finally looked at her and said out loud, “Smooch! Insecurity is so VERY unattractive on you!”

Those words have echoed in my mind for weeks now.

Who enjoys being around someone – even someone you adore – when they behave insecure, petty, jealous, apprehensive… No.  We don’t like that in others. It is not only unattractive – it’s actually repelling and can drive us away. It’s certainly not attractive.

Oh, but how many of us have insecurities? Studies show that most all of us do – differing areas and degrees – but it’s something that seems to be human nature. How many times have you heard an actress or a supermodel say something like, “If I could just fix my nose…” (Doesn’t that make you want to punch them?? Or is that just me??)

And now the holidays are coming. And for many of us being around family, where we should feel safest, often brings out our deepest insecurities.

Despite our best efforts we often revert to old roles. We remember past hurts. We harbor old grievances. And all this adds up to us behaving in unattractive ways.

Now of course I’m not talking about putting yourself in a position to be abused – that is an entirely different and unhealthy thing! I’m referring to carrying around stupid baggage so old that no one else even remembers it. And man oh man can it wreck a holiday.

So while I go cuddle up with Smooch and take a nap (I still have mono – I’m allowed to nap!) I am going to have a talk with myself about ways my insecurities get in my own way – and what I can do about it. And I hope you’ll do the same.

And for those of you who have your insecurities under control and your self esteem firmly intact – have some extra grace with those of us still working on ‘stuff.’

As long as we’re growing – we’ll get there!

The Mooning of Flight 483

It’s been a rather busy travel time this October. More for Marcus than me, I’ve been staying home to rest a bit… okay. Here’s the deal. It seems I have mono.

Yah.

That kind of mono.

I thought that ONE – you only got it in high-school and TWO you could only get it once.

Turns out I’m wrong on both counts.

So the resting thing isn’t exactly optional – it’s more like I’ll sit down and fall asleep practically anywhere – anytime and wake up ready to go to bed!

I called my mom to tell her the diagnosis and she responded with “Ahh! Who have you been kissing!?!”

I think she was teasing, but just in case, I assure ALL of you – other than perhaps my new Gungor CD I’ve only been kissing Marcus. And that was a joke about the CD. Mostly.

Grown Up Potty Training

I am a notorious-avid-awesome multitasker. A fact I’ve always been rather proud of. (Well not so much lately when I keep hearing more and more studies about the long term effects on the brain of multitasking like concentration issues and dementia and …. oh something else…. ) Where was I…

Oh yes, multitasking.

Having lived a lifestyle that demands the ability to multitask, I find it almost impossible to do one single thing at a time.

I read while watching TV and playing “Draw Something” (which probably explains some of my not so stellar pics!).

I answer emails with one hand, file with the other hand all while attempting to hold a conversation on the phone.

I broke my foot last year because I was attempting to text while walking around the hotel swimming pool at night. Frankly I’m very lucky I didn’t drown! Or worse – get my iPhone wet and ruined :).

Heaven forbid I walk into the bathroom without an activity in hand! I am often brushing my teeth (don’t judge me!), reading something or the other and sometimes even petting Garrett (the Ninja dog – who has learned how to open the bathroom door and LOVES plopping at my feet and rolling over onto his back for belly rubs while I’m a captive audience!) A Beautiful Thing

One of my fav bands of all time (Gungor) released both a new CD/Album (yes – the vinyl kind!!) and a book this week. As if that isn’t enough to make it feel like Christmas even in this hot Florida October – they were in town this past weekend for a show. Happy girl?? Ohhhhh – beyond!

Of course hubby and I’ve had tickets since they first announced the show and I have been waiting anxiously ever since! We don’t get to hit that many concerts, so when we do we make them COUNT (like ya know start-up bands like Springsteen, etc – ha ha) and then we have our indie favs that are almost without exception singer/songwriters and they tend to have an Austin (as in Texas) affiliation…

Anyway – we both adore Gungor. And you can read Marc’s blog about why he does (http://www.MarcusEngelBlog.com) which is a fun take for a die hard rockandroll snob!

We get dwntown and it’s raining – and of course we are early and have to stand in line. Thankfully I had an umbrella.

(I told Marcus it was pink with flowers and butterflies all over it -he said he didn’t care… but he was totally  frontin’ – he cares – he just knew it wasn’t true!)

I confess – standing in line I started feeling very…. old & uncool! Where we were at Marcus was the only guy without gauged ears and funky glasses. I was the only girl NOT in jeans AND carrying a purse. And… it did even “smell” a bit like hipster! Just sayin’! Anyway I quickly got “over” it – (especially when I was carded not once – but TWICE – oh yah baby! that’s mE!)

now THIS is living!

Live the Dream!
Live everyday to it’s fullest!
Live like you are dying.
And the 1,004,282 plaques (give or take)
which read something to the effect of:
Live – Love – Laugh.

Have one of these favorite quotes?
Carpe diem, perhaps?
All of the above?

I do! I don’t just want to exist. I want to experience!

One of the things on my “dream list” (I’m MUCH to young to call it a bucket list – maybe once I hit middle age in another 30 or 40 years  – but not yet!) Anyway, one of the fantasies I fully intend to accomplish is a helicopter flight over Manhattan.

Have I mentioned how much I love NYC? I do – ohhh I really really do! And to fly over “my” city and view it in all its concrete jungle glory – WOW! Just wow! I’m vibrating at the very thought… okay, yes I’m a bit obsessed. Did I mention I love New York? Oh… okay – anyway – where were we…

Now, my husband is fearful of almost nothing. So little, in fact, we call him “daredevil” (and if you’re a fanboy/girl and you know anything about my husband you’ll get the reference – otherwise… never mind.) And when I say “we” call him Daredevil, I mean I do. He doesn’t have even a drop of comic book nerdiness in him. But I love him anyway.
